Here, the couple and their children unwind from everyday life in London, just a few steps away from the beach. W hen they initially viewed the house around five years ago, their enthusiasm was limited. “The first thing we noticed were the large numbers of rotten trees, the solid, or- ange, crenelated walls and the curious tower with the thick window bars,” Deborah says. But, at the same time, the location by the sea, with a view of Es Vedra, an uninhabited island surrounded by mysticism and Greek mythology, drew them in. “When we then found out that a small path led from our house to our favour- ite beach, the deal was sealed,” Tom adds. That's why we have a sepa- rate cottage with two bedrooms on the other side of the yard and a bedroom suite below the pool for unannounced guests,” Deborah smiles. Interior design as a creative process As for the interior, Deborah and Tom knew what they wanted from the start: “We were both absolutely convinced that it should be a blue and white house with a slightly faded beach shabby chic vibe, An unpolished jewel by the sea Deborah, who has visited the Balearics regularly since her childhood, wanted to continue this ritual with her husband and the children Phin (13), Mini (11) and Ot- tilie (8). In fact, Ibiza was a favourite holiday destina- tion for Deborah and Tom years before their children were born – not because of the legendary parties, but because they fell in love with the unique flair and the casual ease of island life. Not to mention the easy acces- sibility from London, where the family lives. From a holiday destination to a second home At first, the couple just did little to the house and paint- ed everything white to create a calming atmosphere. “Anyone who have ever tried to buy a house on Ibiza knows that its an enormous task,” Deborah says. “Plan- ning permission took forever, so we were only able to start the remodelling three years later. On the other hand, this meant we had plenty of time to get to know the house and to feel how we want to live in it.” A simple built- in sofa becomes a comfort zone with lots of blue and white cushions. The table lamps are ceramic pineapple vases that have been converted into lamps. “We were both absolutely convinced that it should be a blue and white house.”VON POLL REAL ESTATE | 61 Home story – Deborah Brett with lots of natural textures and ele- ments to capture the mood of the island,” she explains. The couple decided to bring interior designer Hubert Zandberg on board with whom they had already worked on their house in London and whom they trusted completely. Zandberg, who lives in London like his clients, has an instinctive feel for the rough textures and natural elements they were looking for thanks to his childhood in South Af- rica. Renowned for his eclectic yet con- sidered approach to interior design, he stuck to the monochrome blue theme here, using raw brick and stone, rope, leather, willow wicker and straw to vis- ually underpin the different shades of blue and patterns. “In any other case so much pattern and so many shades of blue may have appeared too much, but here the natural textures help to anchor elements and are perceived as neutral,” the interior designer explains, whose extensive knowledge of design and par- ticular nose for procuring unusual and interesting items came to bear here. Together with his team, he concentrat- ed on finding the best craftsmen on the island and personally visited every workshop and atelier to get an idea of the level of craftsmanship and the local materials available. This was necessary, among other things, because Debo- rah had a different design and texture in mind for the fixtures in each room. “Built-in cupboards are often overlooked or look boring. I just wanted them to have personality.” So Hubert and Deb- orah came up with a different design for every room, using natural materials such as bamboo, leather and sea grass, here too. That is invalu- able to us.” The mosaic side tables are Italian vintage items, the rattan stool is by Sika Design. The pendant lamp with a shade made of structured grass comes from Can Costello. The large pool terrace in front of the living rooms offers a magnificent view of the sea.
