But what effect do colours actually have on us, and and how can they best be used to create the desired ambience in our homes?VON POLL REAL ESTATE | 23 Lifestyle T he choice of colour(s) should be matched to the room itself as well as its function, size and lighting conditions. Small rooms often benefit from lighter shades that make them look bigger, while darker shades can create a cosy atmosphere in large and spacious rooms. Making the most of colours Accent walls or colour highlights in fur- nishings and accessories can be used to enhance the individual colour scheme without dominating the entire room. At the same time, colour contrasts can generate a sense of energy and dyna- mism, while harmonious transitions promote a sense of calm and balance. It’s worth experimenting with patterns and paint samples to find the perfect colour scheme. Creating the prefect atmosphere The colours you use within your own four walls always reflect your personality. Bold combinations of strong colours are a sign of creativi- ty and openness, while soft, harmo- nious tones radiate calm and down- to-earthness. That’s why you should think about the atmosphere you want to create and the message you want to convey in advance – be it an inviting cosiness or a modern, inspiring am- bience. However, it should be noted that colours can also have a different effect depending on the light and materials: natural light intensifies warm shades, while artificial light can emphasise cool tones. Feel-good colour trends Warm, earthy tones such as terracotta, ochre and sand are currently making a comeback. They give a feeling of security and bring a piece of nature into your The joy of colour can lend a creative vibrancy to a favourite place at home. Accent colours such as dark blue or sage green can create interesting highlights without being overpowering. When combined with natural materials such as wood, linen or stone, the result is a timeless, warm look. Striking the right note Colours have the power to create at- mosphere and evoke emotions, which makes them key to creating living areas that are not only aesthetically pleasing but functional, too. Instead of following rigid rules, your choice of colour should be flexible and individually adapted to suit your own needs – for rooms that in- spire or calm you or simply bring a smile to your face. i Setting the right scene for colours With simple but effective measures, you can give your rooms an individual and harmonious atmosphere: • Pay attention to the light: daylight changes the effect of colours. Test paint samples in different lighting conditions. Warm, muted colours create a relaxed atmosphere. • Setting accents: instead of painting entire walls, furniture, carpets or curtains all in one colour can set stylish accents. • Dare to do the unusual: dark colours can also give a sense of depth and cosiness to smaller rooms – but there should also be enough light sources. © Photos by Alex Shu (links oben), Billy Jo Catbagan (Mitte), Aaina Sharma (links unten), Toa Heftiba (rechts unten) on UnsplashJUNG.GROUP/LSZERO MADE TO TOUCH. The focus is on classic design elements, bright rooms and floral opulence. A gentle breeze blows through the tall palm trees, while the warm sunlight illuminates the white- washed façade of her property. For Aerin Lauder, heiress to the Estée Lauder empire and founder of the pre- mium brand AERIN, her house in Palm Beach is more than just a home – it’s a retreat full of history, style and inspiring beauty. “Palm Beach has always been a part of my life,” she says with shining eyes. “I grew up here, I’ve spent countless winters here with my family – and when I had the chance to buy this special house, I knew at once that it was the perfect place for us.”¹ A house with a history The villa, a 1930s building in the Louis XVI style, was designed by the renowned architect Howard Major. The Cuban limestone façade, the classic proportions and the lush gardens give the house an almost French feel – an elegant contrast to the tropical backdrop of Palm Beach. “Even as a child, I admired this house,” Aerin recalls. “It had a magical aura, a history that I really wanted to preserve.”² In fact, she was keen to preserve as much as possible during the careful renovation: the original marble floors, the ornate door handles, the slightly weathered mirrors – all treasures of a stylish past. Elegance with a modern twist With the help of her long-time friend, interior designer Stephen Sills, Aerin transformed the property into a unique home that harmoniously unites the past and the present. “I love tradition, but with a fresh, contemporary twist,” she explains. ² As a result, the rooms are dominated by soft white and beige tones, interspersed with powdery turquoise – a tribute to her grandmother Estée Lauder, who loved this colour. In the living room, custom-made sofas are grouped around an ensemble of antique Louis XVI chairs and The house, built in 1930, was designed by architect Howard Major in the Louis XVI style.
