Famous for the models of the legendary Royal Oak series, the brand embodies a fusion of tradition and innovative craftsmanship that is both timeless and trend-setting. Thanks to pioneering innovations, including the development of the perpetual calendar and the ultra-thin movement, AP is now one of the most important watch manufacturers in the world. The descendants of the founding Audemars and Piguet families still play a decisive role in the company's de- velopment and ensure the continuation of its tradi- tional values and independence. Birth of an icon: the Royal Oak The launch of the Royal Oak in 1972 marked an im- portant milestone for Audemars Piguet. Created by the renowned designer Gérald Genta, the Royal Oak was a ground-breaking innovation: its un- mistakable tonneau-shaped case with octagonal bezel and round dial radically broke with the conventions of tradition- al watchmaking. In addition, this watch was the first luxury sports watch made of steel that was treated like a precious metal. In an age time when gold was the dominant standard, the production and finishing of this watch was much more elaborate and costly than most watches actually made of gold! Despite some ini- tial scepticism, it prevailed and became a symbol of innovation and exclusivity. The back of the case is often engraved with the Audemars Piguet lettering and the calibre designation. A stainless steel watch can be worn for years with- out losing its quality, making it ideal for everyday use. Innovation and craftsmanship In addition to the Royal Oak, Audemars Piguet offers a variety of other collec- tions, ranging from modern and classic models in the Code 11.59 series to the sporty Royal Oak Offshore series and the sophisticated Royal Oak Concept watch- es. These collections bear witness to the brand’s technical mastery, embracing complicated movements that include functions such as chronographs, perpet- ual calendars and minute repeaters. The Royal Oak automatic watch in stainless steel combines the iconic “Grande Tapisserie” dial in “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50” with current design trends. © Photo by Metehan Gumusdag on Unsplash © Hasselblad H6DVON POLL REAL ESTATE | 73 A precious heritage The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is fa- mous not only for its design, but also for its role in redefining what a luxury watch can actually be. It has permanent- ly changed the landscape of the luxury watch industry, establishing a new seg- ment of luxury sports watches and in- spiring numerous other watch brands to develop their own versions of stainless steel watches. Its launch was a bold step in a new direction, setting the brand apart from many others and confirming its pioneering role in innovation. The evolution of the Royal Oak Over the years, Audemars Piguet has introduced sever- al variations of the Royal Oak, including different sizes, materials and complications (additional functions of the mechanical movement), besides numerous other watch collections and models. They have contributed to the fact that this collection continues to be one of the most sought-after in the world. The fascinating Musée Atelier Audemars-Piguet in Le Brassus, the birthplace of the brand, provides an overview of the various mod- els and collections as well as their history. With only 23 examples in precious yellow gold, the Royal Oak 15002 is a particularly coveted collec- tor’s item.
