A home becomes special when people feel welcome: through warmth, small gestures and the feeling that time doesn’t matter. Particularly in the cooler months of the year, this creates space for intimacy – and enduring memories. Lifestyle © Photo by Alexandra Marta on UnsplashVON POLL REAL ESTATE | 21 Lifestyle There are times when you want to make your home look its best – not to impress, but to make the occasion extra special. A festively laid table, flower arrangements, exquisite table ware – all of this signals “You’re welcome, and this evening is special.” The table itself becomes a stage: this is where people come together, exchange ideas and tell stories. Hosts and guests alternate between closeness and ritual, between familiarity and new inspiration. It’s not (only) the menu that sets the agenda for the evening, but the composition of the room, its decor and mood. It’s the balance between lightness and solemnity that makes a festive invitation simply unforgettable. Festive & stylish – deliberately staged Sometimes hospitality thrives on abundance. One’s home becomes a place where people can come and go, without any fixed rules or strict schedules. Friends bring friends along, children run around, conversations branch out in all sorts of directions. The living room, kitchen, perhaps even the conservatory or terrace – small islands of interaction crop up everywhere. This form of invitation blurs the roles between hosts and guests. Everyone contributes something: a bottle, an anecdote, a helping hand. What counts here is openness, movement and fellowship. Maybe it’ll go on all day; maybe it’ll be an evening that lasts longer than planned. The open house – when spaces fill up The best evenings often happen without any plan at all. A quick call, a spontaneous “Come on over” – and soon you're sitting together. Two or three friends, a table in the living room or just the sofa, candlelight and music in the background. These are evenings that have no script; they flow freely, fuelled by conversation and laughter. The atmosphere is laid-back: coats are draped over the backs of chairs, glasses are lined up on the coffee table, someone brings a bottle of wine, another person pulls a few snacks from the stash. Nobody cares about perfection: instead what counts is the feeling of being welcome and simply being able to hang out. A cosy get- together – entirely spontaneous The best thing about an invitation are the moments that linger.22 | VON POLL IMMOBILIEN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LIGHT EMOTION MEETS FUNCTION The way rooms are lit has a major impact on how we feel. Light can be calming or energising, convey a sense of space or create a feeling of security. With well thought-out planning, it becomes a design element that gives your home individuality and vibrancy. © Photo by Hadi Yazdi Aznaveh on UnsplashVON POLL REAL ESTATE | 23 Lifestyle W hether at home or in pub- lic spaces, selective lighting influences our level of fo- cus, energy and mood. Sometimes it’s invigorating; sometimes it has a calming effect. In the living area in particular, it’s worth taking a good look at the interplay between the lights, colour temperature and positioning. Well-thought-out con- cepts can turn functional rooms into liv- ing spaces radiating cosiness, personali- ty and a special flair. The key factor here is not only what a room is used for, but also what kind of atmosphere you want to create in it – clear and structured or gentle and inviting. Making the invisible visible Often, it’s not the furnishings them- selves that impress, but how they are arranged. Strategically placed lighting can structure areas, highlight details or create a sense of calm. Reflections, shad- ows, special accents – they all have a di- rect effect on our sense of perception. It’s been scientifically proven that light influences our biorhythm, controls hor- monal processes and so directly affects our mood. No wonder, then, that it’s now considered to be just as important as colours, textures and materials. Colour temperature, light zones, effect Warm white, neutral white or cool white? The so-called colour tempera- ture of a light source is measured in Kel- vin: the lower the value, the warmer and softer its effect. Warm tones, comparable to candlelight, generate a sense of relaxation and cosi- ness. They are particularly suitable for bedrooms, living areas or reading cor- ners. Neutral white comes across as function- al and clear – ideal for kitchens, bath- rooms or studies. Cooler light energis- es and helps you to focus, but can be disruptive in the evening as it makes it harder for you to fall asleep. Warm white calms, cool white energises: light colours influence a room’s ambi- ence. Modern interior design thrives on har- monious combinations. Accent light- ing (spotlights, wall lights), functional lighting (e.g. under cupboards) and at- mospheric lighting such as table or floor lamps create structure and a cosy ambi- ence. Dimmable systems offer additional flex- ibility: soft lighting has a calming effect, while brighter settings encourage activ- ity. Intelligent controls can automatical- ly adjust the lighting to suit the time of day, mood or intended use. Natural light from outside also plays an important role: large windows, translucent cur- tains or reflective surfaces can be used to enhance the effect of a room. Staging rather than just illuminating Light can do more than illuminate rooms – it can transform them. Archi- tecture can be emphasised, spatial pro- portions extended, and lines of sight directed. Wall floodlights expand the space visually, spotlights add accents, and indirect lighting creates a sense of visual calm. The key principle? Don’t limit your de- sign to ceiling lights. A successful light- ing atmosphere thrives on the interplay of different heights, directions and types of light. Three to five strategically placed sources in each room is a good rule of thumb to create rooms with depth, character and charm. Specific light- ing structures rooms and creates moods – sometimes calming, sometimes invigorating. Well-designed lighting gives living spaces depth, character and a distinctive feel.JUNG.GROUP/LSZERO MADE TO TOUCH. DESIGNED TO CONTROL. H idden on a five-acre water- front property, surrounded by ancient oaks, citrus trees, and a lush vegetable garden, the estate of Elle Macpherson offers more than just a tropical backdrop. What tru- ly defines this home is its thoughtful design, through which the Australian – now also a presenter, actress, and suc- cessful entrepreneur ¬– has realized her ideas of style, sustainability, and quality of life. Architecture with intention Designed by architect Chad Oppen- heim, the imposing building is reminis- cent of Normandy architecture. For the interior design, Macpherson enlisted the renowned New York design studio Sawyer Berson. Her goal was to create a domicile that felt vibrant, relaxed, and welcoming – open to family, friends, and change – and that doesn’t feel like a showroom or an art gallery. The style blends Mediterranean modern with a touch of mid-century – restrained, yet not cold.
